HP Printer Test Page

A full HP diagnostic on one sheet: color blocks, an alignment grid, a gray ramp, nozzle-check lines, and a text block, laid out the way HP’s own Print Quality Diagnostic report is. Read it to tell a clog from a misalignment from a cartridge fault.

How to Print This Test Page

Load plain white US Letter or A4 paper and click Print This Page, then pick your HP printer in the dialog. Set quality to Normal or Best and turn off fit-to-page scaling so the alignment grid prints at true size. What This HP Test Page Checks

This sheet packs five diagnostics onto one page: an alignment grid, solid C/M/Y/K color blocks, a gray ramp, per-channel nozzle-check lines, and a small text block. The layout follows HP’s own Print Quality Diagnostic report, which HP structures as three labeled patterns — Pattern 1 (alignment), Pattern 2 (the color blocks), and Pattern 3 (gray blocks). Reading our sheet the same way means the result maps onto what HP’s firmware-generated report would tell you.

Each zone isolates a different failure. The color blocks and the nozzle-check lines catch a clogged or empty channel; the alignment grid catches a printhead that lands ink off-position; the gray ramp catches a color cast from one channel firing too hard. To break a single channel out on its own, the CMYK test page gives each ink its own intensity strip, and the ink coverage estimator shows how much ink a given page pulls from each channel.

HP Inkjet vs LaserJet: Reading the Output

What a bad zone means depends on the HP hardware in front of you. HP inkjets — DeskJet, ENVY, OfficeJet, Smart Tank — are thermal printers with nozzles, so the nozzle-check and color zones apply directly: gaps mean clogs, and cleaning the printhead is the first move. HP LaserJets have no nozzles or liquid ink, so never run a nozzle clean on one. A LaserJet defect — repeating marks at a fixed spacing, a faded side, vertical streaks — points to the drum, toner, or fuser, so on a laser you read the alignment grid and text zones and ignore the nozzle lines.

One HP quirk surprises even seasoned users. On classic OfficeJet and OfficeJet Pro models (the HP 940 generation, such as the 8000 and 8500 series), ink is split across two printheads in an unusual pairing: black and yellow share one printhead, magenta and cyan share the other. A missing yellow block and a missing black block can therefore be the same failed part, so you replace the pair rather than the single color you see. This does not apply to the integrated tri-color cartridges in most DeskJet and ENVY models, or to Smart Tank, where the nozzles sit on the cartridge or a single printhead.

When a Bad Block Isn't a Clog

If a color block prints blank on an HP+ or Instant Ink printer, check the cartridge before blaming the printhead. HP+ printers permanently require Original HP cartridges, and HP’s Dynamic Security firmware rejects a third-party or refilled cartridge — the printer flags it as missing or damaged, and that color never lays down. An Instant Ink cartridge also stops working the moment the subscription lapses or the cartridge moves to another printer. None of that is a clog, and head cleaning will not fix it.

Rule it out by reading the cartridge status in HP Smart first. What to Look For

  • Color blocks (C, M, Y, K): each should be a solid, even field. White streaks or a faint block point to a clogged channel or low ink.
  • Alignment grid: lines should be straight and evenly spaced, with every crosshair centered in its circle. Wavy or doubled lines mean the printhead needs aligning.
  • Gray ramp: each step should read neutral gray. A pink, green, or blue tint means one channel is over- or under-firing relative to the others.
  • Nozzle-check lines: every band should be a continuous field of fine lines with no white gaps. Missing lines mean blocked nozzles (inkjet only).
  • Text block: the smallest line should still have crisp, unbroken edges. Fuzzy or doubled text points to alignment, resolution, or the wrong paper type.

Troubleshooting Tips

My HP test page shows white streaks in one color. What should I do?
On an HP inkjet, run a printhead clean from HP Smart (Printer Settings, then Tools or Print quality tools, then Clean Printhead) and reprint. If streaks remain, escalate to a second or third clean. On DeskJet and ENVY models the nozzles sit on the cartridge, so swapping that color’s cartridge is often faster than repeated cleaning.
A color block printed blank but the nozzle lines look fine. What else causes that?
On HP+ and Instant Ink printers, Dynamic Security can reject a non-HP, refilled, or moved cartridge, and that color stops printing. Check the cartridge status in HP Smart before cleaning the printhead, because head cleaning never fixes a blocked cartridge.
Does this test page work on an HP LaserJet?
Use the alignment, gray, and text zones, since they apply to any printer. Skip the nozzle-check and ink-cleaning advice: LaserJets have no nozzles. For a laser-native report with toner level and page count, print the Configuration page from the control panel (Setup, then Reports) or the printer’s Embedded Web Server.
How is this different from HP's own Print Quality Diagnostic report?
The zones follow the same idea, so you read them the same way, but this sheet prints from any browser and needs no app. HP’s built-in report is generated by the printer’s firmware and adds ink or toner levels and the serial number. Our HP test page how-to covers printing HP’s version.
How often should I print a test page on my HP inkjet?
Before any job that matters, and after the printer has sat unused for a week or more. HP thermal inkjets dry and partly clog when idle, and a 20-second test print catches a soft nozzle before it ruins a full-page photo.
