About this conversion

Ink coverage measures what percentage of a printed page is covered by ink. A standard business document typically has 5% coverage — mostly black text with white space. A full-color photo can reach 200–300% total coverage (combining all four CMYK channels). Understanding coverage helps you estimate printing costs and predict when cartridges will need replacing.

This tool analyzes your image pixel by pixel, converting each pixel to its CMYK equivalent and averaging the ink percentages across the entire image. It reports coverage for each channel (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black) and a total coverage percentage. The cost estimate is based on typical ink costs per milliliter at the coverage levels detected.

Keep in mind that actual ink usage depends on factors beyond pixel coverage: your printer's driver settings (draft vs. best quality), paper type (absorbent paper uses more ink), and the printer's internal ink management system (some printers use ink for periodic cleaning cycles). Treat the estimate as a useful guideline, not an exact prediction.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a normal ink coverage for a document?

A standard business document with black text averages about 5% coverage. A color presentation might be 15–25%. Full-page color photos can reach 80–100% per channel (up to 300% total across CMYK). Printer manufacturers typically quote cartridge yields based on the 5% coverage standard.

How is the cost estimate calculated?

The tool uses average ink costs of approximately $0.05–0.08 per ml for standard inkjet cartridges. It multiplies the estimated ink volume (based on coverage percentage and page area) by the cost per ml. Actual costs vary by printer model, cartridge type (OEM vs. third-party), and print quality settings.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. All processing happens entirely in your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API. Your images are never sent to any server — they stay on your device throughout the analysis.

Why does the same image show different coverage on different printers?

Different printers use different ink management algorithms, dot sizes, and color profiles. A printer might lay down more ink for deeper blacks or use ink-saving modes. The coverage estimate from this tool represents the image content itself, not the specific behavior of any particular printer.
