How to Print a Test Page on HP Printers

HP printers are among the most widely used home and office printers in the world, and printing a test page is one of the simplest ways to make sure yours is working the way it should. A test page checks ink or toner levels, color accuracy, and print head alignment all at once. Here are two straightforward methods that cover nearly every HP model.

Method 1: Using the Printer Buttons

When you do not have a computer handy, most HP printers can produce a test page straight from the hardware controls.

General button method (many DeskJet and ENVY models)

  1. Make sure the printer is turned on and loaded with paper.
  2. Press and hold the Power button.
  3. While still holding Power, press the Cancel button once.
  4. Release the Power button.
  5. The printer will feed a self-test report page.

Models with a touchscreen or LCD

  1. On the control panel, tap Setup (the gear icon) or press the Menu button.
  2. Navigate to Reports or Tools.
  3. Select Print Quality Report, Printer Status Report, or Self-Test Report.
  4. Tap OK or Print.

HP LaserJet models

  1. On the control panel, press Setup or Menu.
  2. Go to Reports and select Configuration Report or Demo Page.
  3. Press OK to print.

Method 2: Using HP Software

HP offers dedicated apps that make running diagnostics effortless, even if you are not particularly technical.

HP Smart (recommended for most current models)

  1. Open the HP Smart app on your computer or mobile device. If you do not have it yet, download it free from the Microsoft Store, Apple App Store, or Google Play.
  2. Select your printer from the home screen.
  3. Tap or click Printer Settings, then navigate to Tools or Printer Reports.
  4. Choose Print Quality Report or Printer Self-Test Page.
  5. Hit Print and wait for the page to come out.

HP Solution Center (older models)

  1. Open HP Solution Center from your Start menu or Applications folder.
  2. Click Settings and then Printer Toolbox.
  3. Under Device Services or Maintenance, select Printer Self-Test or Diagnostic Page.
  4. Click Print and review the output.

Why Print a Test Page?

  • Ink or toner status. The report typically includes a graphical bar for each cartridge so you can see at a glance which supplies are running low.
  • Color accuracy. Solid color blocks on the page reveal whether any channel is clogged, faded, or printing the wrong hue.
  • Alignment quality. Misaligned print heads cause fuzzy text and shifted images. A test page makes alignment problems obvious.
  • Connectivity confirmation. If the page prints successfully, you know the connection between your device and the printer is solid.

Tips for Best Results

  • Try the HP Embedded Web Server (EWS). Type your printer's IP address into any web browser on the same network. The EWS dashboard lets you print test pages, view supply levels, and adjust settings without installing any software.
  • Use HP Smart on your phone. The mobile app can trigger test prints and run diagnostics even when you are away from your desk.
  • Print a test page after every cartridge change. This catches installation issues immediately and gives the printer a chance to calibrate.
  • Keep firmware updated. HP periodically releases firmware that improves print quality and fixes known issues.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Streaks or lines across the test page

Run the Clean Printhead utility in HP Smart or on the printer's control panel. If streaks persist after two cleaning cycles, try a deeper Second-Level Clean option if your model supports it.

Colors look wrong or are missing

Open the cartridge door and confirm each cartridge is seated firmly in the correct slot. Remove and reinsert any cartridge that feels loose. If a color is still absent after reinstalling, the cartridge may be empty or defective.

Test page is completely blank

Check that the protective plastic tape has been removed from new cartridges. For laser models, pull out the toner cartridge and gently rock it side to side to redistribute toner, then reinsert and try again.

Printer says it is offline

Restart the printer and your computer. For wireless models, verify both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network. On Windows you can also go to Devices and Printers, right-click your HP printer, and select See what's printing to clear any stuck jobs.

Final Thoughts

Printing a test page on an HP printer is a quick task that pays off in reliable, high-quality output every time you print. Whether you prefer the HP Smart app, the built-in web server, or a simple button press, regular test prints help you catch problems early and keep your HP printer in top shape.
