How to Print a Test Page on HP Printers (4 Methods)

Stylised printer with blue accent strip, a software settings icon on the left, a hardware button icon on the right, and a colour bar test page emerging from the output slot.
HP offers both software and hardware methods to print test pages.

HP has the most complex printer ecosystem of any consumer brand. There is the HP Smart app (cloud-based, works on Windows, Mac, iOS, Android), legacy full-feature drivers (Windows only), the Embedded Web Server (any printer on a network), and two subscription programs (HP Instant Ink and HP+) that change how test pages interact with your ink allocation. Knowing which method to use and how these programs affect your test pages will save you both time and ink.

The HP Smart App Method

HP Smart is now the primary way HP expects you to manage any printer made after 2018. It runs on Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android, and handles everything from test pages to supply ordering.

  1. Download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store, Apple App Store, or Google Play if you have not already. It is free.
  2. Open the app and add your printer. HP Smart will detect printers on the same Wi-Fi network or connected via USB.
  3. Tap your printer tile, then go to Printer Settings → Tools (or Printer Reports on some versions).
  4. Select Print Quality Report. This prints a page with color bars, alignment patterns, and supply level indicators.
  5. If the report shows streaking or missing colors, HP Smart will prompt you to run a Clean Printhead cycle directly from the app.

HP Smart also offers a Diagnose & Fix feature that automatically checks connectivity, driver status, and print queue health. If your printer is not printing at all, run Diagnose & Fix before doing anything else, as it resolves the majority of basic connection issues.

Test Page from the Printer Control Panel

When you do not have a phone or computer nearby, the printer itself can generate a test page. The exact steps vary by model line.

DeskJet and ENVY (no display)

Hold the Power button, press Cancel once while still holding Power, then release both. The printer will feed a self-test report. This report includes ink levels, a color bar strip, and the printer's serial number.

OfficeJet and ENVY Inspire (touchscreen)

Tap the gear icon on the touchscreen, navigate to Reports, and select Print Quality Report or Printer Status Report. Tap Print.

LaserJet and LaserJet Pro

Press Setup or Menu on the control panel, go to Reports, and select Configuration Report. This prints a detailed page showing toner levels, page count, firmware version, and network settings. On mono LaserJet models, also try Demo Page to see a full-coverage print quality sample. Compare the output against a black and white test page to verify toner density and text sharpness.

HP Embedded Web Server

Every HP printer connected to a network (Wi-Fi or Ethernet) has a built-in web interface called the Embedded Web Server (EWS). Most users do not know it exists, but it is the most powerful diagnostic tool HP provides.

  1. Find your printer's IP address. On touchscreen models, go to Network Settings → View Network Settings. On models without a display, hold the Information button (labeled with an "i") to print a network configuration page.
  2. Open any web browser on a computer or phone that is on the same network. Type the printer's IP address in the address bar (for example, 192.168.1.42).
  3. The EWS dashboard loads. Navigate to the Tools tab (or Web Services on some models).
  4. Click Print Quality Report or Print Test Page. You can also view detailed supply levels, configure paper tray settings, and access the printer's full configuration without installing any software.

The EWS is particularly useful for office printers shared across multiple workstations. Any user on the network can check supply levels and print a test page without needing HP Smart installed on their machine.

HP Instant Ink and Test Page Counts

If you subscribe to HP Instant Ink, every page your printer produces counts against your monthly page allowance, including test pages. A color test page with full coverage bars uses the same single page credit as a text-only email. HP counts pages, not ink volume.

This means running frequent diagnostics on an Instant Ink plan can eat into your allowance. If you are on the free 15-page plan and print three test pages for troubleshooting, you have used 20% of your monthly allocation before printing anything useful. Consider these strategies:

  • Use the EWS or HP Smart to check ink levels digitally instead of printing a supply status page.
  • If you need to print a test page, use the ink coverage estimator first to understand how much ink the page will consume.
  • Rollover pages from low-usage months carry over on paid plans (but not on the free plan), so plan diagnostics for months where you print less.

HP Instant Ink cartridges also behave differently from standard cartridges: they stop working if your subscription lapses, even if ink remains in the cartridge. A test page can help confirm whether a "cartridge problem" error is genuinely empty ink or a subscription status issue.

HP+ Printers: What You Need to Know

HP+ is an optional enrollment available during initial setup on certain HP printer models. Enrolling extends your warranty and adds some cloud features, but it permanently locks the printer to genuine HP cartridges. Third-party, refilled, or remanufactured cartridges will not work and the printer will refuse to print entirely.

This affects test page behavior in one important way: if you swap in a non-HP cartridge, the printer will display a cartridge error and will not print anything, including test pages. If your HP+ printer suddenly stops printing after a cartridge change, the first thing to check is whether the new cartridge is genuine HP. This is not a printhead issue or a spooler error; it is cartridge authentication.

HP+ enrollment is permanent. If you value the option to use cheaper third-party cartridges, skip HP+ enrollment during setup. You can still use HP Smart and all standard printer features without it.

If your HP printer has issues beyond what a test page can diagnose — connectivity problems, driver conflicts, or error codes — see our printer troubleshooting hub for step-by-step guides organized by symptom. For alignment or print quality problems revealed by the test page, the alignment test page and nozzle check test page can help isolate the specific cause.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does HP Instant Ink count test pages against my monthly limit?

Yes. HP Instant Ink counts every page that passes through the printer, including test pages, diagnostic reports, and accidental prints. A test page uses one page from your monthly allocation regardless of ink coverage. If you run frequent diagnostics, factor this into your plan choice.

Can I print a test page on an HP printer without installing HP Smart?

Yes. On DeskJet and ENVY models, hold the Power button and press Cancel once, then release both. On LaserJet models, go to Menu → Reports → Configuration Report. You can also use Windows: go to Settings → Printers & scanners, select your HP printer, click Printer Properties, and click Print Test Page.

What is the HP Embedded Web Server and how do I access it?

The HP Embedded Web Server (EWS) is a web interface built into network-connected HP printers. Find your printer's IP address (print a network configuration page or check your router), then type that IP address into any browser on the same network. The EWS lets you print test pages, check supply levels, and adjust settings without installing any software.

Will an HP+ printer work with third-party ink cartridges?

No. HP+ printers are permanently locked to genuine HP cartridges. If you insert a third-party or refilled cartridge, the printer will refuse to print. This lock cannot be reversed; it is a condition of HP+ enrollment. If you want third-party cartridge flexibility, do not enroll in HP+ during printer setup.

Why does my HP printer print a blank test page?

Check that protective tape has been removed from new cartridges. For inkjet models, run a printhead cleaning from HP Smart. For LaserJet models, remove the toner cartridge and gently rock it side to side to redistribute toner. If the page is still blank, the cartridge may be empty or defective. See our full blank pages guide at printertools.net/blog/printer-printing-blank-pages for the complete cause tree.

How do I print a diagnostic page on an HP LaserJet?

Press Setup or Menu on the control panel, navigate to Reports, and select Configuration Report or Demo Page. Press OK to print. The report shows toner levels, page count, firmware version, and network configuration. On LaserJet Pro models with a touchscreen, tap the gear icon → Reports → Printer Status Report.
