Why a Nordic colour spec ends up as a RAL powder-coat

A balcony balustrade for a Malmö apartment block gets specified as NCS S 2050-B, because that is the language the architect's finish schedule speaks — Sweden's building trade has quoted colour in the Natural Colour System for decades. Then the drawing reaches a metal fabricator, and the fabricator's powder-coating line does not hold NCS. It holds RAL. Someone has to turn a Nordic surface-colour code into a German coating code with no manufacturer's chart to lean on. That is the handoff this converter makes: enter an NCS notation and it returns the closest RAL Classic colours, ranked, each with a distance score that says how close the nearest coating really is.

The NCS side is a lookup and the RAL side is a search, and that asymmetry is the whole story. Pick an NCS notation and you get one reference colour; ask for the RAL equivalent and you get a shortlist, because no single RAL chip is guaranteed to sit exactly on it. The distance score is there so you never mistake the closest chip for a certified match.

Two physical standards that were never meant to meet

NCS and RAL are both physical colour standards, and both describe surfaces rather than light — but they were built by different people for different trades. NCS, from Stockholm, is a perceptual system: a notation like S 2050-Y10R states how black, how chromatic, and which hue a colour is, so two people can agree on a colour by description alone. RAL Classic, from Germany, is a catalogue: four-digit codes from RAL 1000 to RAL 9023, each tied to a specific coated chip a paint or powder supplier can reproduce. Neither body publishes a map to the other. NCS Colour AB certifies NCS; RAL certifies RAL; no official NCS-to-RAL table exists from either side. Anything that converts between them, this tool included, builds a bridge from indirect evidence rather than reading off an authorised chart. How the bridge is built: NCS to RGB to nearest RAL

The bridge runs in two lossy steps, so the result is doubly approximate — a point this tool states rather than hides. First, each NCS notation in the set carries a published RGB reference, and that RGB is itself an approximation: NCS is defined perceptually for physical surfaces, not for screens, so the triplet is a stand-in for the real chip. Second, the tool takes that RGB and finds the nearest RAL Classic reference by colour distance — the straight-line (Euclidean) gap between the two colours' red, green, and blue values on a 0–255 scale. That distance is a plain RGB gap, not a perceptual Delta-E and never labelled as one; it ranks candidates well but is blind to how the eye weights hue against lightness. The NCS side reads the same 46-notation subset used by the NCS to RGB converter; the full NCS collection now holds about 2,050 standard colours, so a notation outside the common architectural range will not appear.

Where the two palettes actually overlap

Here is the part that runs against the obvious guess. You might expect that bridging two unrelated standards, neither built with the other in mind, would match worse than routing through a mainstream system like Pantone. It does the opposite. Push the whole NCS set through this tool and the median nearest-RAL distance is about 33.5. Run the same maths from Pantone into RAL and the median jumps to about 41.6 — noticeably blunter. NCS to RAL is the tightest of the derived RAL bridges here, level with the reverse RAL-to-Pantone trip at about 33.6 and clearly ahead of Pantone to RAL. The reason is coverage, not luck. NCS and RAL are both surface-colour systems for the built environment, so both are crowded with the muted greys, ochres, and earth tones that architecture and industry actually use, and both thin out in the same saturated corners. Pantone is an ink system dense in exactly those saturated corners where RAL Classic is empty, so its colours drop into RAL voids far more often: over half the Pantone set lands past distance 40, against 37% of the NCS set. The overlap shows up by hue — neutral greys and browns match in single digits, while a saturated NCS green or magenta can sit 50 to 75 units from anything RAL offers. One honest wrinkle: the reverse direction, RAL into NCS, is marginally tighter still at about 30.5, because the NCS set deliberately includes a few high-chroma anchors with no RAL neighbour that pull this direction's average up. The tool reports its own rougher edge rather than smoothing it over.

Reading the distance score before you order a coating

Treat the distance as a go / proof / stop signal. Under about 15 means a real coating equivalent exists — the greys and earth tones land here, so you can specify the RAL code after checking one sample. In the teens to high thirties the nearest RAL is the right colour family but visibly off, so order a physical chip and sign it off under the lighting the part will live in before committing a coating run. Past 40, where the saturated hues sit, the tool is telling you no faithful RAL coating exists: choose one by eye against a RAL K7 fan deck, accept a deliberate substitution, or keep the colour in a system that can hold it. Whatever the number, keep both codes on the drawing and never write "NCS = RAL" — the NCS notation stays the reference for the specified surface, the RAL code is the reference for the coated part, and the distance score exists because the two are rarely identical. This is the gap that keeps some NCS colours from ever becoming a faithful RAL coating: pick by eye against a fan deck or keep the colour in a system that holds it.

The full NCS collection now holds about 2,050 standard colours. This tool searches a curated 46-notation subset spanning the hue wheel and the neutral axis — the codes most common in architectural specifications. A less common notation will not appear; for those, read the RGB from an NCS Navigator or atlas and use the RGB-based converters instead.

Can I give the matched RAL code straight to my powder coater?

If the distance is small, yes — RAL codes are the standard specification language for powder coating, and any certified coater can reproduce a RAL Classic code from their formulation. But the match here is derived, not certified, so confirm the suggested RAL against a physical RAL K7 chip first. A 30-unit match can read acceptably on screen and clearly wrong on a coated panel under shop lighting.
