Toner, Drum, and Fuser on One Sheet

A Brother laser sheet is read differently from an inkjet one, because nothing on a laser sprays ink. Toner is a dry powder that a charged drum picks up and a hot fuser melts onto the page, so the faults you hunt for are toner density, drum marks, and fusing — not clogged nozzles. This page puts the laser-relevant checks on one sheet: an alignment and registration grid, solid C/M/Y/K blocks, a gray ramp, a repeating-defect gauge with a printed millimetre ruler, and a fuser rub bar.

The split that trips up most Brother owners is toner versus drum. Brother sells them as two parts — a TN-series toner cartridge (the powder, e.g. TN-760) and a DR-series drum unit (the photosensitive cylinder, e.g. DR-730) — and they wear out on different clocks, with the drum usually outlasting three or four toner cartridges. An overall fade means toner; a repeating mark or a gray haze means drum. Reading It on a Brother Laser vs a Brother Inkjet

The slug is just “Brother,” so this one sheet serves both Brother engines — and the same printed blocks mean different things on each. The geometry (the grid, the blocks, the ramp, the text) prints the same way on a laser and an inkjet; what changes is how you read a gap or a streak. Read down whichever path matches your machine.

If it is a Brother laser (HL, DCP, or laser MFC): a washed-out or blotchy solid block is low toner — rock the cartridge side to side and reprint before replacing it. Evenly spaced horizontal banding, ghost images, vertical lines, or a gray haze on the white margins point to the drum unit. Toner that smears when you rub the fuser bar is a fusing fault. On a color laser, a cast across the gray ramp is a job for the panel’s Calibration routine, and a colored fringe on black text is a job for Color Registration.

If it is a Brother inkjet (the INKvestment or MFC-J line): read the very same blocks and fine lines for nozzle dropout instead — gaps, broken lines, or banding mean clogged or misaligned nozzles, and the fix is a head clean or alignment, not a drum. Match a Repeating Mark to the Worn Part

Here is the laser reading that pays off and that no inkjet sheet can offer: a defect that repeats at a fixed interval down the page names the part that caused it. Each rotating part — drum, developer roller, fuser rollers — touches the page once per turn, so the gap between two identical marks is that part’s pitch. Print the gauge in Section 4, find two matching marks, and measure the gap in millimetres against the ruler.

The non-obvious part is that the pitch is not always the roller’s circumference. Brother’s own HL-2140/2150N/2170W service manual lists the develop roller at 20.0 mm diameter — a 62.8 mm circumference — yet its mark repeats every 41.0 mm, because the magnetic roller surface runs faster than the paper. The OPC drum (24.0 mm) repeats at 75.0 mm and the fuser rollers (25.0 mm) at 78.5 mm, where pitch does equal circumference. So a mark every ~41 mm on that model is the developer, not the drum.

Treat those numbers as a worked example from one model, not a universal table: Brother prints a different pitch table for each engine, and on many Brother mono models the drum repeats nearer 94 mm. The method is what carries across — measure the pitch, then read it off your own model’s service-manual table. If the mark does not repeat, it is a one-off speck, not a worn roller.

Measure a repeating mark’s pitch against the ruler, then match it to your model: on a Brother HL-2140, 41 mm is the developer roller and 75 mm the drum.

What to Look For

  • Alignment grid: lines square and crosshairs meeting at a point. A colored fringe on the black lines is a color-plane registration fault on a color laser.
  • Solid blocks: each printed block one even tone. A washed-out or blotchy block is low toner; a missing block on a color laser is a low or failed toner station.
  • Gray ramp: a smooth grade with no abrupt steps. Even horizontal banding through the midtones points to the drum or charge roller.
  • Repeating-defect gauge: no mark should repeat down the gray field. If one does, measure its pitch in millimetres against the ruler and match it to your model.
  • Fuser rub bar: rub or fold it once printed. Toner that smears or flakes means the fuser is not bonding it to the paper.
  • Text block: the smallest line still crisp and unbroken. A colored halo on black text means the planes need registration.

How do I tell a toner problem from a drum problem on a Brother?
Read the pattern. An overall fade, washed-out solids, or low density across the whole sheet is the TN toner cartridge — rock it side to side and reprint, then replace it if it stays faint. A mark that repeats at a fixed spacing, a gray haze on the white margins, ghost images, or a vertical line is the DR drum unit.
A mark repeats down the page at a regular spacing. What is it?
A repeating mark is a worn rotating part, and its spacing names which one. Print the repeating-defect gauge, measure the gap between two identical marks in millimetres against the ruler, and match it to your model's service-manual table. On a Brother HL-2140, about 41 mm is the developer roller, 75 mm is the drum, and 78.5 mm is the fuser.
Why does my Brother say 'Replace Drum' but the test page still looks clean?
Brother's drum warning is a page-count estimate, not a reading of the drum surface. A drum often prints cleanly past its rated count. Use the test page, not the message: replace the drum when you actually see repeating marks, ghosting, vertical lines, or haze — not just because the counter tripped.
The Windows 'Print Test Page' looks different from this sheet. Which should I use?
They do different jobs. Windows' Print Test Page is generated by the driver and only confirms the PC can talk to the printer. For toner, drum, and fuser faults, print this diagnostic sheet, or run Brother's own firmware self-test from the panel (Machine Info or Print Settings) for the page count and consumable readout.
Does this page work on a Brother inkjet?
Yes — the alignment grid, color blocks, gray ramp, and text print on any engine. On an inkjet (the INKvestment or MFC-J line) read gaps and streaks as clogged or misaligned nozzles and fix with a head clean or alignment. The repeating-defect gauge and fuser rub bar are laser checks and will not apply.
Toner rubs off the page after printing. What causes that?
That is a fusing fault, not a toner or drum problem. The fuser melts toner onto the paper with heat and pressure; if it is worn, cold, or set for the wrong media type, toner never bonds and smears or flakes along a fold. Check the paper-type setting first, then have the fuser serviced if the rub bar keeps smearing.
My color laser prints a slight color cast on grays. How do I fix it?
Run the printer's Calibration routine from the panel (on touchscreen models, the toner icon, then Calibration). Calibration rebalances per-color density so neutrals stay neutral. If black text also shows a colored fringe, run Color Registration as well — that aligns the four color planes and is a separate routine.
